Is buying pre-loved fashion safe? How buyer protection works

    · 5 min read · Re· editorial

The real risks of buying second-hand fashion online in the UAE, and how escrow payments, buyer protection, and a 24-hour check window on Re· remove most of them.

The honest answer is that buying pre-loved fashion is exactly as safe as the payment rails underneath it. On a social feed with a bank transfer, you are trusting a stranger with no recourse. On a marketplace with escrow and a protection window, the structure does the trusting for you.

What actually goes wrong in second-hand shopping

There are four recurring failure modes, and they are worth naming plainly:

    • The item never ships after you have paid.
    • The item arrives but is not the item in the photos.
    • The item has damage that was never disclosed.
    • The item is counterfeit.

Each of these is a payment problem before it is a fashion problem. If money moves to the seller the moment you press pay, you have no leverage. If it does not, you do.

    How escrow changes the maths

On Re·, payments are held in escrow by our payment partner, a third-party payment protection provider. When you check out, your money leaves your card but does not reach the seller. It sits with our payment partner while the order is picked up and delivered, and it is released to the seller only once the order completes.

That single mechanic removes the worst outcome: an order that is never shipped cannot be paid out. The order is cancelled and you are refunded.

    The 24-hour check window

Delivery is not the end of the transaction. After your parcel arrives you have 24 hours to check the item against its listing. Try it on. Look at the seams, the hardware, the labels, the areas the photos did not cover. If anything does not match, wrong size, undisclosed damage, a different item, a suspected counterfeit, you report it in the app and request a return.

That is what the 8% buyer protection fee and 1.95 AED platform fee pay for. It is not an abstract insurance product; it is the window during which your money is still recoverable.

Condition grading you can actually read

Ambiguity is where disputes are born, so Re· listings use six fixed grades: Brand New, Unworn, As Good As New, Good Condition, Fair, and Damaged. A listing marked Good Condition with a photographed pull on the sleeve is a listing you can judge accurately. Sellers are expected to photograph flaws, and the check window is what makes that expectation enforceable.

    No meet-ups, no cash

Re· arranges pickup from the seller and delivery to your door across the UAE, typically in two to four days, from 17.5 AED (39.5 AED for remote areas). Nobody has to share an address in a DM, meet in a car park, or count notes. That is a safety feature as much as a convenience one.

What buyer protection does not do

It is worth being straight about the limits. buyer protection covers items that do not match their listing. It is not a change-of-mind returns policy, a jacket that fits and matches its photos but does not suit you is not a protection case. Read measurements carefully, and message the seller before buying if you are unsure about fit.

    Buying with confidence

Check the condition grade, read the flaw photos, confirm the measurements, and pay in the app rather than off it. Do those four things and second-hand shopping becomes the low-risk, high-reward habit it should be. See the full guide to buying on Re·, the trust and safety overview, or what everything costs.
